Hedge Arcanist

You keep to your books and scholars and formulae. I know that just a pinch of ornsleaf will do the trick - my grandfather's grandmother passed it down.

Feathers and Tinctures, by Tracy Butler

Not all arcanists learn through some type of formal study or at the feet of a recognized master. Others learn from family or some dabbler, cobbling together solutions that would never be sanctioned by a 'real' wizard, using cleverness and patience. Found in small villages in rural areas or deep within city slums where education is lacking, the hedge arcanist is someone who has learned to make do with what they have, making their spells sometimes less reliable, but they often gain additional effects, as well.

Playing a Hedge Arcanist

Your general hedge arcanist is no less clever than a more traditionally trained mage, but they often have less book knowledge at hand. Instead, they supplement their skills with acculumated folk wisdom and remedies, tested empirically over generations and found to work at least as well as the formal methods - or at least, close, but at much reduced cost.

As a hedge arcanist, you are probably from a small community where you learned from a family member or the region's previous arcanist who recognized a natural gift in you. Consider that your has likely involved being particularly poor - at least, by the standards of city folk, though if your plate was sometimes a little bare, well, it was all the tastier for knowing hard work went into filling it, and it was earned with friends and family.

Of course it would be best to use an ounce of silver for this spell - but that's expensive, and silvered fish scales work just as well - well, mostly.
